The story
This hat has been with the same owner since the 1991 NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis. After Duke defeated UNLV in the national semifinal, the owner personally approached Christian Laettner, watched him sign this Duke hat, brought it home, and never wore it.
The game attached to the hat is part of Duke basketball history. UNLV entered the semifinal 34–0 as the defending national champion after having beaten Duke by 30 points in the 1990 championship game. Duke won the rematch 79–77. Laettner led Duke with 28 points and made two free throws with 12.7 seconds remaining for the final margin. Two nights later, Duke defeated Kansas 72–65 for the program’s first men’s basketball national championship.
